Abbott, Simses & Kuchler recently sponsored a reception for the Chair of the American Bar Association's Commission on Women in the Profession, Pamela Roberts. Ms. Roberts addressed the many challenges women face as mothers, wives and professionals. Specifically, she discussed the recent survey results by the Commission regarding the continued existence of a "glass ceiling" for women in the legal profession as well as improvements corporations have made for women in terms of executive position appointments. The Commission also made recommendations as to how to increase women's activity in the profession through alternative means, such as flexibility in work hours and suspension of partnership tracks to allow time for child rearing. Rhea Sheldon, an associate in the Jackson office, actively planned the October reception for Ms. Roberts. * * * Abbott Simses & Kuchler also recently sponsored the Hinds County Bar Association's roundtable program called "Diversity: a Corporate Counsel and a Corporate Executive Perspective", at the Marriott Hotel in Jackson, Mississippi. The esteemed panel of executives, attorneys, and accomplished professionals discussed methods of promoting diversity at law firms and in companies in Mississippi. Keynote speaker, Mr. Joaquin Carbonell, Vice President and General Counsel of Cingular Wireless, also provided valuable insight into these very important issues while emphasizing their practical application in real-world settings.
