CHARLES T. MIERS is a shareholder of Abbott, Simses & Kuchler, and practices out of the Firm's Houston office.  Mr. Miers attended Texas State University where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in political science and history.  He graduated from the University of Houston Law Center in 1992 where he was a member of the school's National Moot Court Team and was a finalist in the school's Mock Trial Competition.

Since his graduation from law school, Mr. Miers has been responsible for a broadly diverse and complex civil litigation docket.  Prior to joining Abbott, Simses & Kuchler in 1998, he was a name partner in Haskins, Sabatier & Miers and served as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Houston in its Business Litigation Division.  He represented the City of Houston in various matters including successfully defending the City in an eminent domain and "takings" case and resolving various breach of contract cases.  He successfully resolved numerous other claims and lawsuits brought against various City departments for a myriad of business reasons.

Mr. Miers' current litigation caseload includes representing clients in a variety of areas including, commercial litigation; employment issues; environmental issues; maritime claims; product liability claims; toxic and mass tort claims; class action defense; and wrongful death and personal injury claims.  His most recent reported decision is E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company v. Shell Oil Co., 259 S.W.3d 800 (Tex.App. – Houston [1st Dist.] 2008, pet. denied), in which his client prevailed on an breach of indemnity agreement claim.  In addition to representing clients in such diverse lawsuits as alleged trucking mishaps, chemical explosions, environmental damages and commercial disputes, Mr. Miers vigorously works with clients in resolving disputes to avoid litigation.

Mr. Miers has also successfully handled numerous appellate matters in various Texas and Louisiana State courts, as well as the Federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mr. Miers has been licensed to practice law by the State of Texas since 1992 and is admitted to practice before the Federal Fifth Circuit Court, the Southern, Northern, and Eastern District Courts of Texas, and all Texas state courts.  He has also handled matters in many other states on a case-by-case basis. 

Mr. Miers is computer savvy and highly proficient in various legal research and litigation software programs and operating systems, including Microsoft Word®, PowerPoint®, Outlook®, Excel®, and Windows® operating systems. His, as well as the Firm's, commitment to technology allows him to be available 24/7 to meet the demanding needs of today's business.

Mr. Miers is a member of the Defense Research Institute, and the Texas State Bar Foundation has elected Mr. Miers as a Life Fellow. Mr. Miers was recently named a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. The Litigation Counsel of America is a honorary society composed of less than one-half of 1 percent of American lawyers. Fellowship is highly selective and by invitation only. Fellows are selected based on effectiveness and accomplishment in litigation, both at the trial and appellate levels, and superior ethical reputation. Mr. Miers is also actively involved in the management of the Firm and serves on the Firm's Diversity Committee and Harassment and Discrimination Committee.

Mr. Miers was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, but has been a Texan "by choice" for over a quarter century. He and his wife, Sandi, share a passion for Renaissance art and architecture and enjoy traveling when time permits.
